Born in Owen Sound, Ontario, André completed his Mmus in composition at the University of Western Ontario where he studied with Dr. David Myska. As an active composer in the Canadian music scene, he has collaborated with numerous artists, including the Toronto based, Vaso String Quartet, who premiered André’s String Quartet in late 2018. In addition, he has received numerous premieres at the Newfound Music festival in St. John’s, NL: (Structures in the Sand, 2014; SHAI’HULUD, 2015; Moirai, 2016). André has also been commissioned by Reverb Brass (Whorls, 2017) and was featured as a young composer in the Tuckamore Music Festival (Somewhere Between Us, 2017).
Also recently, Andre’s masters thesis composition, Capriccio for Mixed Ensemble and Piano (2018) was premiered in London, Ontario under the direction of conductor, Simone Luti. Marking a new maturity in Andre’s musical style, this piece is “virtuosic and capricious in nature—at times dance-like and rhapsodic, at others, pensive and introspective”. The rhythmic vivacity and idiosyncratic harmony of this piece are qualities that strongly define Andre’s unique musical sound.
